Yes, I know the spelling is incorrect.
But, why is that the case? Why is “grateful” the proper spelling?
Over the years this has been a source of confusion for me.
Greatful. Grateful. Which looks more positive to you?
grate: verb 1: to rub or rasp noisily 2: to cause irritation
great: adjective 1: large in number or measure 2: remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness 3: full of emotion
Simply based on the definitions of each base word, wouldn’t it make more sense to use “great” instead?
I welcome the opinions and thoughts of any fellow lover of the English language.

While at work yesterday, I got a phone call (we have direct lines) that was… interesting.
Me: This is Amber, how can I help you?
Male voice on other end: Hey there…. this is your father.
Considering I haven’t associated with my biological father since I was 12 and my step-father passed away just over two years ago, my stomach did a weird little flip before I could muster that the caller had a wrong number.
Going off on a completely different tangent:
Web sites that force you to use IE and don’t work properly in Firefox are retarded. :grr:

I could be $5 richer right now. Not that $5 is a lot of money, but when you find some on the floor or on the street, it’s like the little prize at the bottom of the Cracker Jack box that always made you smile when you were a kid.
Someone on my office floor dropped $5 and a smoothie card for Robeks in the restroom. Had I found this on the street amongst hundreds of people, there’d be no way to find the owner…but since this was on the restroom floor with only about 12 women to choose from, I put a note on the mirror that instructed the owner to come find me with details on the amount that was lost. Don’t want to risk just any greedy woman trying to claim it, ya know. Some of them are downright bitches without their morning lattes and $5 is the perfect amount to buy one. :hmph:
